A Rough Guide to Me and My Neurodivergent Family - How to Get Curious Instead of Furious

Does your partner make no sense to you in the way they approach certain tasks? Do your parents often misinterpret your behaviour? Do you have children whose needs clash and you’re constantly trying to help them to compromise? Do you and the people you care about find yourself in patterns of Drama when you want to understand and be understood?

When our brains are wired differently from those of people around us, we can get confused, frustrated, furious or full of despair. We might simply not make sense to one another and avoid interacting.

Sometimes we are so differently wired from another that we cannot conceive of how their internal world works. It can be like travelling to a very distant land with completely different language, customs and meaning. We need a rough guide simply to navigate the most basic of landmarks.

This weekend is about developing a Rough Guide to Me and my Neurodivergent family. You can come along on your own and compare and contrast your landscape with those of other participants. You can come along with friends, colleagues or with other members of your family and compare and contrast your landscapes with those close to you as well as with the other participants.

Our aim over these two days is to use a technique called clean questions and an approach of clean attention to help us to understand other people through the logic and landscape of their world rather than imposing our own onto theirs.

It’s open to anyone wanting to attend for their personal exploration. It is also open to family therapists, coaches, managers, teachers and HR professionals wanting to have better ways to explore and respond to the different processing patterns of the people they support.

There is some pre-reading and some personal preparation prior to attending so please make sure that you can devote three hours of personal reflection and planning time before you arrive. This can be done on your own or you can make use of the Clean Campus and have a skilled volunteer do a Clean-ish interview with you to help you to prepare for the weekend.

A light vegetarian lunch will be provided and there will be juice, tea and coffee through the day.

Frequently asked questions

What is Clean Language?

Clean Language is a simple set of questions developed by counselling psychologist David Grove. These questions are used with a person’s own words to direct their attention to some aspect of their own experience. Asking these questions in the right context often results in an interesting new insight or the recognition of some new possibility. And if that new possibility is then questioned using Clean Language, the result can be quite profound. Clean questions invite people to consider their experience from different perspectives and they are often surprised by their own capacity to generate new, powerful and useful ideas about their own experience.

What is Systemic Modelling?

Systemic Modelling is an approach for supporting groups to use clean questions and metaphor models to better understand one another and to develop the skills and capability to collaborate meaningfully.
